Text: Exodus 15:26

Title: Healthy Spiritual Living

Introduction:

question: Have you ever had a frightening experience that was so terrifying it has caused you a bit of anxiety in the future?

ill. Tipping in a Sail Boat on the St. Croix river - "Mr. Hassman can we pray?" I was scared to cross bridges for a few months.

ill. Sadly I read of a little boys caught up in the chaos of the tsunami. It was weeks before he was reunited with his family. Now, when the power goes out he runs and clings to his mother. Why? Because he is afraid that what he saw is going to happen to him again.

In Exodus 15, Israel has just entered into the blessing of their freedom from Egypt. As God delivered them, the enemy of Israel has gone through some frightening experiences witnessed by Israel.

1.) God plagued Egypt for not allowing Israel to go free.

1. Water into blood.

2. frogs

3. Lice

4. Flies

5. livestock disease

6. boils

7. fiery hail

8. locusts

9. Darkness

10. Death of the first born child in every home.

2.) Israel had just witnessed the power of God to bring them through the Red Sea on dry land and they watched as the tsunami of unrestrained water destroyed the Egyptian army.

exp. The Children of Israel are beginning to understand that God is awesome and powerful.

There would be a bit of anxiety as they asked the question, "What is going to keep this from happening to us?"

note: They don't have the Bible.

1.) They had stories past down from their fathers.

2.) They had personal experiences of God's power. (increasing in intensity.)

3.) They now had a prophet to preach God's Word to them as God revealed it. (Beginning now... according to our text.)

The first message God gives to them is - You don't have to be afraid that what you saw will happen to you IF....

exp. God gives them a conditional promis of blessing if they will obey Him.

Exo 15:26  And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.

exp. You may have heard me mention this verse in prayer last week. When you read a verse about healing when you are ill - it stands out to you. And something within you says, "If there is anything I can do to get well - I will do it."

My message this morning, "We need to obey God for spiritually healthy living."

question: Does my spiritual obedience really effect the quality of my physical life?

ill. Ask Ananias and Saphira who perished because of their hypocracy.

ill. What about the "many who were weak and sickly" because they took the Lord's supper without a right heart.

ill. The wisest man said your spiritual life effects your physical life.

Proverbs 3:7  Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.

8  It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.

ill. Peter agreed.

1Pe 3:10  For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:

exp. I'm going to preach this message from Israel and apply this promise to the church this morning. If for any reason you disagree and think we shouldn't believe God will preserve and bless us physically for our obedeince - that is fine. BUT YOU MUST AGREE THAT EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THE PRINCIPLES WE'LL CONSIDER ARE STILL WHAT GOD WANTS US TO DO - REGARDLESS OF THE BLESSING.

Exo 15:26  And said, If .... I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.

We need spiritually healthy living. Do you have a spiritually healthy life?

I. Be sensitive.

...thou wilt diligently hearken...

ill. In Children's SS at times children don't listen. Teachers will sometimes say to their children, "All right children let's put our ears on." Why? Because if your ears are on - you are listening.

ill. Before radar - the military developed listening devices to hear incoming enemy aircraft. Some were very funny looking - two long horns with tubes that came to your ears. They really had their ears on.

exp. God wants his people to get their ears on. He is preparing them for the giving of the law.

ill. I mentioned last Sunday PM that I read last Sunday afternoon about God's coming like fire on mount Sinai.

1.) Wash themselves and their clothes.

2.) Do without pleasure.

question: How seriously did God want them to regard His revelation? He wanted them to diligently hearken.

ill. The church of Berea were known for their diligent hearing.

Act 17:11  These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

exp. They had their ears on.

app. Christian do you have your ears on? Are you sensitive. If God spoke quietly to you today would you get it?

ill. Elijah on another mountain - Horeb - the mount of God.

1 Kings 19:11  And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake:

12  And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.

app. God wants to bless our life and guard us from his judgment. He wants our ears to be sensitive to His instruction.

II. Be selective.

...to the voice of the LORD...

ill. My dad has lost a bit of his hearing. This past year he completely lost hearing in one ear because of a virus. I remember dad joking about selective hearing. When you don't hear what your wife said because you are tuned into something else - baseball game, etc.

exp. God wants your selective hearing to be tuned in to Him.

ill. Paul diminishing the gift of tongues in the eyes of the early church said in 1 Corinthians 14:10  There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.

11  Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.

exp. Do you know the voice of Jehovah this morning?

Joh 10:16  And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

Joh 10:27  My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

ill. Watching lambs at Pentland Institute - they are normally twin lambs. The pasture would have maybe 25 Ewe's with their lambs. The ewe's and lambs have matching numbers spray painted on their sides. When that mother ewe bleated for her lambs they would come running to her. They knew her voice.

exp. They were in tune.

quote: "Marching to the beat of a different drum."

exp. God wanted his people to hear HIS VOICE. God wants us to hear his voice. There are many other voices clammoring for our attention. You hear his voice (tune in) by opening God's Word by yourself, as a family, in church.

app. God wants to bless you and guard you from judgment. Are you tuned in? Are you selectively listening.

III. Be saved.

...to the voice of the LORD thy God,

exp. It may be that you are not hearing Him today because he is not "the LORD thy God."

question: Why was God the God of the children of Israel?

1.) They had a covenant relationship with Him as the children of Abraham.

2.) He had brought them out of Egypt by His might and power.

3.) He was bringing them into the land of His blessing.

Has God entered into a covenant relationship with you? Has God brought you out of the world? Is God bringing you into the promised land of blessing?

Heb 12:18  For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,

19  And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard intreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more:

20  (For they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart:

21  And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:)

22  But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,

23  To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,

24  And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.

exp. We have a new covenant (through His blood) We are brought of the world and brought unto the heavenly Jerusalem and CHURCH OF THE FIRSTBORN.

App. Do you want God's blessing as promised to Israel. You must enter into a covenant with him through the blood of Jesus. You must be saved. If he isn't your God, you will not have His blessing.

IV. Be sincere.

...and wilt do that which is right in his sight,

exp. What his covenant people do must be right in His sight.

ill. Moving to Scotland - knowing in one year we have to take the driving test. I had been driving since I was 16. For the last 4 years we had travelled 1,000's of miles each month as we raised our support. I was driving a big vehicle pully a 13,000 pound, 11 foot tall, 35 foot long caravan.

question: Why was I worried about the test - because I had to do things right in the instructors eyes.

1.) Handling the steering wheel.

2.) The order in which you check your mirrors.

3.) The hand brake for hill starts.

exp. If I did what was right in my eyes I would fail. I had to sincerely seek to do what was right in the eyes of the instructor. IN SCOTLAND - HE WAS RIGHT AND I WAS WRONG.

exp. If what is right in my eyes conflicts with what is right in God's eyes - GOD IS ALWAYS RIGHT AND I AM ALWAYS WRONG.

question: Will that happen?

Jdg 17:6  In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes.

Pro 12:15  The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.

Pro 21:2  Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts.

app. You are not sincerely listening to God when you know that your view (eyes) conflicts with God's view (eyes) and you refuse to acknowledge that you are wrong. He wants to bless you but He can not unless you sincerely listen to Him.

V. Be submissive.

...and wilt give ear to his commandments,

exp. Hearing in the Bible is active.

1Jn 5:15  And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

exp. Why do we know that God will answer - because he heard. (hearing means doing)

ill. Psa 66:18  If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me:

question: Does that mean that God has set aside his omnipresence and omniscience and did not get the audible signal from your vocal chords? No - He heard but he isn't going to do anything. "He didn't hear you."

ill. People who are submitted are those who hear.

Mat 11:15  He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

Mat 13:9  Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.

Mat 13:43  Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.

app. If you are giving ear to His commandments - you are submitted to them. Therefore with great attention - you hear the word of God and do it. God wants to bless you. But, he can not if you are living in disobedience to Him.

VI. Be circumspect.

...and keep all his statutes,

exp. In our study of Romans we have often said, "God's law is like a chain." To break a single link, is to break the chain. Jas 2:10  For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

question: Is God pleased today if I keep 9 of the 10 commandmants and wilfully break the 10th? Is 90 percent obedience acceptable to God?

ill. Before God gave the ten commandments he gave the people one commandment as he blessed them with Manna. The blessing was every day you get one days worth of manna except for Fridays. On Fridays you get 2 days worth because Saturday is the Sabbath. Honor me by not working on that day.

Exodus 16:26  Six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the sabbath, in it there shall be none.

27  And it came to pass, that there went out some of the people on the seventh day for to gather, and they found none.

28  And the LORD said unto Moses, How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws?

29  See, for that the LORD hath given you the sabbath, therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.

30  So the people rested on the seventh day.

app. The idea of one day a week being consecrated to God - is foreign to our modern society. Has God changed his desire for His people to consecrate a day to Him. *As a church we give him the 1st day of the week. Is that really important. (It was given before the ten commandments and was included in the ten.) HOW CIRCUMSPECT ARE YOU WITH REGARD TO GOD'S LAW?

app. This multi week cold makes me willing to do about anything to get better.

It made this verse about Spiritually healthy living stand out in my Bible reading and I want to get every blessing God intends from this promise. IT IS CONDITIONAL.

Exo 15:26  And said, If.... I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.

1.) ARE YOU SENSITIVE?

thou wilt diligently hearken

2.) ARE YOU SELECTIVE?

to the voice

3.) ARE YOU SAVED?

of the LORD thy God,

4.) ARE YOU SINCERE?

and wilt do that which is right in his sight,

5.) ARE YOU SUBMISSIVE?

and wilt give ear to his commandments,

6.) ARE YOU CIRCUMSPECT?

and keep all his statutes,

MAY WE NOT LACK THE BLESSING BECAUSE FAIL TO MEET THE CONDITION OF THE PROMISE.
