Title: He Brake It... Broken for Me

Introduction:
As Jesus often did, He accepted the hospitality of others and dined with them. In Mark 14 we find him at another meal in the home of Simon the leper.

Twice in the Word of God Jesus is annointed with precious ointment from an Alabaster Box. Though there is much similarity in the stories, they are two different individuals at two different places.

A year before his burial a woman who had been a great sinner annointed his feet with ointment in the home of Simon the Pharisee.

Just a week before His death another woman annointed him by pouring precious ointment upon His head. This is Mary of Bethany, sister of Lazarus. The home is the home of Simon the leper.

exp. I want to focus on this story of Mary of Bethany as we begin because it says in this story that "She brake the box...."
Mark 14:3  And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head.
4  And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said, Why was this waste of the ointment made?
5  For it might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her.
6  And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me.
7  For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always.
8  She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying.
note: I want to emphasize that statment, "She brake the box.... broken for him."
exp. Alabaster is a marble used to store oil which were sealed inside by a wax seal.
exp. To break is to part asunder. This ointment flowed freely once the box was broken.

again - my emphasis this morning - She brake it - Broken for Him.
exp. She was saying to the Lord "Lord - this is how greatly I value your death. This shows what it is worth to me."

In contrast to what Mary did for Jesus, we will focus on what Jesus brake for us.
My message this morning is titled - He brake it.... Broken for you. Those very words come from our text this morning....

1Co 11:24  And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.

Mary broke it because Jesus deserved it. Jesus broke it because you needed Him to brake it. He broke it for you.
exp. We're going to consider what God broke for you because you needed God to brake it. YOU NEEDED GOD TO BRAKE IT....

I. Because of the shame of your sin - God broke the animal.
def. broke - parted asunder.
exp. He parted the skin from the flesh of the animal to cover your shame.
A. Shame because God's law was despised.
ill. Often in public lives - sin when exposed - brings great shame and dishonor. That person despised the law and thought they were above it - until they were exposed.
ill. Eve led mankind into the shame of despising the law of God.
Genesis 3:6  And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
ill. Adam and Eve sinned. Don't stand in too harsh of judgment upon Eve and Adam. Their whole life to this point was in perfect obedience to God.  They walked with God in the garden of Eden. They were corrupted in adulthood. You and I were born in corruption. We despised God's law from birth.
exp. David in Psa 51:5  Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.
Isa 64:6  But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
app. If your sin isn't covered today, God does not see you as a good person. God sees you as the law breaking sinner which you are. To sin is shameful because it is to despise God's law.
B. Shame because of an awakened conscience.
7  And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
exp. Their conscience knew that something was wrong and that they needed to hide from God. Their exposed skin was no longer covered by the innocent purity of their heart. They had suddenly become responsable for the knowledge of good and evil.
ill. They tried to cover their shame with fig leaves.
exp. Man hasn't changed much in the last 6,000 years. Man is still sowing fig leaves over his shame.
1.) Men clothe themselves in religion, christening, fasting, giving, they try to work out the problem themselves.
2.) Men try to ignore their shame and just get on in their nakedness by denying that God exists and that they have to enter his presence CLOTHED.
app. We have a conscience - if it isn't seared - it screams at us that we are unclean and naked before a Holy God. Heb 4:13  Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.
C. Shame because God is holy and man is not.
8  And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.
9  And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
exp. Would you feel comfortable to walk into the Holy presence of God today?
Isaiah 6:1  In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.
2  Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.
3  And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.
4  And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke.
5  Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.
app. If you have any sense of the holiness of God, you have a great sense of the shame of your sin.
D. Shame because fellowship with God was broken.
10  And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
11  And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?
exp. In your sin - you can not walk with God.
conclusion: God had a remedy but to make the remedy - he had to brake the animal. It doesn't sound like a big deal - so what - an animal had to die to make clothes. It is a prophetic picture of Jesus.
21  Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.
app. God broke it.... broken for you. You needed a sin covering.

II. Because of your bondage to the enemy - God parted (broke) the sea.
exp. The Red Sea was broken for God's people, Israel, to provide a way to destroy the enemy and bring them to safety on the other side. (Exodus out of Egypt.)
exp. If the Christian archeologists are correct - Israel has the gulf of Aquaba before them, they had come down a driver river bed with cliffs on either side - Pharoah's army is behind them. THEY NEEDED A WAY OF SALVATION FROM THE BONDAGE OF THE ENEMY.
Exodus 14:13  And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.
14  The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.
15  And the LORD said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward:
16  But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea.
17  And I, behold, I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they shall follow them: and I will get me honour upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen.
exp. It is a great thing when people - are overwhelmed by the enemy - see no way of salvation and call out to God for deliverance - BECAUSE HE HAS MADE A WAY OF DELIVERANCE.
Joh 14:6  Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
1.) The enemy can not follow.
exp. Israel crossed over on dry land between the walls of water. (It looked impossible but God made a way.) Egypt in seeking to cross was destroyed.
The cross defeats Satan but it saves us.
2.) Those who pass over are delivered. (Miraculously)
app. Don't get upset at God for letting you feel the enemy in your life. Let Him show you the way of deliverance AND TAKE IT - YOU NEED IT.
Rom 10:13  For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
exp. God broke it.... broken for you.

III. Because of your thirst which nothing satisfies - God broke the rock in the wilderness.
Exodus 17:3  And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?
4  And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me.
5  And the LORD said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go.
6  Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.
exp. Their thirst typifies the soul thirst of man for the water of life. The rock is a picture of OUR ROCK - the Lord Jesus. The striking of the rock pictures the crucifiction of Christ from whom flowed blood and water.
ill. Jesus, the Rock, is the well spring of the water of life!
The woman at the well. John 4:7  There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.
8  (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)
9  Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.
10  Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
11  The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?
12  Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?
13  Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
14  But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
app. Friend if you are not saved - you are not satisfied. There is a search for happiness, peace, meaning.... which will never be fulfilled until you drink of Jesus!
exp. God broke it.... broken for you.

IV. Because of your separation from God - God broke fellowship with Himself at Calvary.
exp. God is three and God is one. God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Ghost.
God is eternal and had never been separated until our sin was put on Jesus on the cross.
2Co 5:21  For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
Col 2:14  Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
exp. When this took place God the father turned His back upon His Son, Jesus.
Mark 15:33  And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.
34  And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
 note: One of the worst things about Hell is that God isn't there. 2Th 1:9  Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;
app. If Jesus hadn't broken eternal fellowship with the Father, you could not be spared eternal separation from God.
exp. God broke it.... (fellowship with Himself) broken for you.

V. Because of the punishment for your sin - Jesus body was broken for you.
exp. Jesus body was broken and his earthly tabernacle was parted from His Spirit.
Mark 15:35  And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calleth Elias.
36  And one ran and filled a spunge full of vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether Elias will come to take him down.
37  And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost.
exp. Jesus died. His flesh was left as an empty shell in the cold dark tomb of Joseph while his Spirit departed.
note: Jesus was unjustly killed - not just by man's law but by God's.
Rom 6:23  For the wages of sin is death;
Eze 18:20  The soul that sinneth, it shall die.
app. He had never sinned. HE DIED GUILTY FOR YOUR SIN!
1Pe 3:18  For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
note: Praise God - He didn't stay in the grave - HE WAS QUICKENED BY THE SPIRIT.
ill. the angelic messenger at the tomb declared- Mar 16:6  And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him.
app. Since God punished Jesus in your place - you don't have to be punished - if you take His forgiveness as He took your punishment!
exp. God broke it.... broken for you.

VI. Because of the condemnation of the law - God broke the vail of the temple.
exp. You had no entrance into God's holy place until God broke the law with saving grace.
note: The law condemned you.
ill. Those who claim self righteousness (I'm a good person) are illogical. If they are good then surely the law would testify to their goodness. But, it will never say, "They didn't lie, lust, covet, pervert, curse, abuse God's name, abuse their bodies...." It will say otherwise.
exp. When the vail of the temple was rent - the law for righteousness was set aside FOR THOSE WHO WOULD ENTER INTO GOD'S HOLY PRESENCE BY FAITH IN JESUS.
exp. No more animal sacrifices. No more ceremonial cleansing. No more ritual - BUT ONLY SAVING GRACE THROUGH FAITH IN JESUS.
Romans 3:20  Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
21  But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
22  Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
app. Praise God - true righteousness is now attainable - not by keeping the law - but being pardoned by God's grace.
exp. God broke it.... broken for you.

conclusion:

He broke it - Broken for you.
exp. You needed God to brake it. Without Him breaking this for you, you would....
1.) Have no covering for your shame.
2.) Have no liberation from the enemy.
3.) Have nothing to satisfy your soul thirst.
4.) Have no way to fellowship with God.
5) Have no forgiveness from the punishment of your sin.
6.) Have no pardon from the condemnation of God's law.

note: He brake it! Broken for you!
Mary broke the Alabaster box for Jesus. She valued what He would brake so much that she broke the precious box of ointment for Him!
question: Have you anything to brake for Him today? What can you part asunder for him? Will you let God brake you of....
1.) Your unbelief. "He brake it.... broken for you." Break your unbelief and trust in God today. Break it and go to God in faith!
2.) Your pride. "He brake it.... broken for you." Won't you step out by faith to identify with him. Come forward to get saved. Commit yourself to being baptized. Commit yourself as a follower.
3.) Your will. "He brake it.... broken for you." He broke it in obedience to the Father.... will you?
4.) Your sin. "He brake it.... broken for you." Broken so that you could have victory. Won't you let Him brake the bondage of sin in your life.
Pro 28:13  He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.
5.) Your life. "He brake it.... broken for you." He lost his life for you. Won't you lose your life for Him? Mar 8:35  For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it.

Title: He Brake It... Broken for Me

Introduction:

As Jesus often did, He accepted the hospitality of others and dined with them. In Mark 14 we find him at another meal in the home of Simon the leper.

I. Because of the shame of your sin - God broke the animal.

III. Because of your thirst which nothing satisfies - God broke the rock in the wilderness.

Exodus 17:3  And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?

app. Friend if you are not saved - you are not satisfied. There is a search for happiness, peace, meaning.... which will never be fulfilled until you drink of Jesus!

exp. God broke it.... broken for you.

IV. Because of your separation from God - God broke fellowship with Himself at Calvary.

Rom 6:23  For the wages of sin is death;

21  But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;

HE BRAKE IT... BROKEN FOR YOU.

HE BRAKE IT... BROKEN FOR YOU. Date: 28 November, 2018
Text: Topical

Col 2:14  Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
exp. When this took place God the father turned His back upon His Son, Jesus.
Mark 15:33  And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.
34  And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
 note: One of the worst things about Hell is that God isn't there. 2Th 1:9  Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;

Rom 6:23  For the wages of sin is death;

Romans 3:20  Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

exp. God broke it.... broken for you.
