Title: Outspoken for God
 
 
Introduction:
It can be interesting at times having an American accent in Scotland. 
Some people assume that just because you sound like you aren't from here that you aren't from here. 
(We've been here a decade and have citizenship. Two of our kids don't remember the US.) 
- We're very much used to the climate.
- We're way used to the driving - I have a hard time going back to right side driving.
- We're can well understand and be better understood than when we first arrived.
- But if we ask a question, we sometimes get answered as if we're from another country.
 
ill. I visited Alan in Hospital a few times lately and twice I've had to ask at the nurse's station for, "Alan McGraith." They get a confused look on their faces look at one another and say, "You mean McGrath." I can almost see them thinking (.... dumb American... doesn't know how to say a Scottish surname correctly.) McGraith is correct! 
 
exp. I'm thankful that we don't always know what people are thinking when they meet us or we'd probably hear things we don't want to hear.
 
text: (page 1131) In our story today in ACTS 4, we have the early church in it's infancy.
note: The word of God speaks OUT LOUD to let us know what the false religious leaders thought of the early church Gospel preachers.
 
exp. It was something like, "Dumb fishermen...But, man are those guys bold! I wonder if it's because they spent time with Jesus?"
13  Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.
def. boldness: outspokeness, assurance, confidence
 
 chapter 4 of Acts has a theme of boldness running right through it. The early church was a bold OUTSPOKEN church. 
v.31  And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.
 
We need to be outspoken for God. How bold are you?
 exp. We're going to consider (from Acts 4) the areas in which we could follow the model of the early church and be bold for God.
 
I. Speak out boldly in persecution.
def. persecution - Persuing someone to cause them to suffer.
note: Our sense of rightness and fairness doesn't like persecution.
ill.  If we heard a story about bullying we would get upset. It's wrong for that bully to persue someone to cause them to suffer.
      If we hear about someone "trolling" someone online (putting inflamatory information online to purposely in digress from a topic.) We get upset because that isnt' fair.
 note: Because we think it is unfair, it seems we are suprised when it happens to a believer. But, we shouldn't be.
2 Timothy 3:12  Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
ill. Jesus is the Captain of our salvation and he was persecuted unto death.
Heb 2:10  For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.
Heb 2:9  But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.
ill. God's preachers have historically faced persecution.
Jas 5:10  Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience.
 ill. In my evangelism, I've had people tell me - Christianity is a crutch. You need it - I don't. I tell people like that, "Christianity isn't a crutch - it's a cross." JESUS WAS CRUCIFIED. 
App. How are you going to respond when you are persued by those who want you to suffer as a Christian? We need to speak out boldly in days of persecution.
A. Be bold when opposed.
exp. Peter and John, God's preachers, faced great opposition. The lame man was healed and a great crowd has assembled who have heard these bold preachers declare Jesus!
1  And as they spake unto the people, the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees, came upon them,
2  Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
exp. When the enemies of Jesus are upset, you are doing something right.
1Co 16:9  For a great door and effectual is opened unto me, and there are many adversaries.
 ill. We've put out hundeds of thousands of flyers with very little feedback even from believers. I've often lamented this - But, Pastor Dillman last month got a letter back from a Christian couple in Livingston - VERY ENCOURAGING. The next week he got a flyer back that was written all over and it was not favourable. (persecution)
exp. We've received a few of those over the year. I've had angry people yell at me and received a few phone calls. 
 ill. My last phone call was for close to an hour and I've told you, "Pray for the farmer of Skirling." He didn't hinder me from using that flyer. His phone call and the other negative feedback caused me to reprint 10,000 more flyers. (Why? Because if Satan doesn't like it, it must be hitting a target.)
 note: We don't need a persecution complex - we've not yet begun to suffer as some believers have suffered in their day. BUT SATAN WILL ACTIVELY OPPOSE US.
app. When Satan opposes you (people are grieved by what you are saying as you stand for God) don't stop speaking! Ask God for boldness and continue to be outspoken for Jesus.
B. Be bold when losing liberty.
3  And they laid hands on them, and put them in hold unto the next day: for it was now eventide.
4  Howbeit many of them which heard the word believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand.
exp. Peter and John lost their liberty that night. But, as they were losing their liberty (5,000 men plus women and children) were set free from their bondage.
 ill. Jesus, Sermon on the Mount, Preached on persecution.
Matthew 5:11  Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
12  Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
13  Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
14  Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
15  Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
16  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
 note: Immediately after preaching on persecution Jesus reminded them that THEY were salt and that THEY were light. AND THAT THEIR LIGHT SHINING AND GOOD WORKS - would bring men to glorifying the Father in Heaven.
exp. Peter and John could have could have said, "Well I guess we can't preach Jesus. If we do, we'll lose our liberty."
  note: Satan doesn't want you to be outspoken SALT AND LIGHT. He'll try to stop your saltiness and put out your light.
 ill. Hate crime legislation in Scotland has UNASHAMEDLY targeted believers. Police Scotland bus stop sign, "Dear Bigots, division seems to be what you believe in. We don't want your religious hate on our buses, on our streets and in our communities. We don't want you spreading your intolerance. Or making people's lives a misery because of their religious dress.  You may not have faith in repsect and love, but we do. That why if we see or hear your ate, we're reporting you. End of sermon. Yours, Scotland. (Hate crime. Report it to STOP IT.)
exp. Our liberty is beginning to be threatened - future persecution may relize that reality. 
app. Be bold - people need to be saved! Speak out, even if losing liberty.
C. Be bold when questioned.
exp. Peter and John had spent the night knowing that in the morning they would be on trial before the Sanhedrin. 
def. Sanhedrin: Seventy Rabbis who were the ruling body of the Jews. These earthly judges had recently given Jesus a mock trial before turning him over to Pilate.
note: The Holy Spirit would have been emboldened the resolve of these preachers with the words of the Lord recorded in....
Matthew 10:18  And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles.
19  But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.
20  For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.
 exp. Now -  the cell door opens and they are ordered to their feet to face earthly judges.
5  And it came to pass on the morrow, that their rulers, and elders, and scribes,
6  And Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem.
7  And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what name, have ye done this?
exp. What is your source of miraculous power, in whose name have you done this work?
  note: As with our Lord the Sanhedrin DID NOT BELIEVE THAT THE POWER WAS FROM GOD. (Mat 12:24  But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.) 
exp. There are times where believers will face interrogation from an earthly authority who does not accept the AUTHORITY of God behind what we do.
 ill. Kampili - Japanese Interrogators in WWII - Darlene Diabler Rose - Evidence Not Seen - If an answer didn't please the Brain, he would snap an order to the Interrogator, who struck me a swift karate chop with the cutting edge of his hand. He was skilled in striking with great force and precision that very tender spot close to the shoulder at the base of the neck. A well-placed blow was excruciatingly painful and paralyzing. other times the Interrogator used his middle finger. Flicking it from behind his thumb, he thumped me repeatedly between the eyes until I thought my nerves would explode. My forehead became bruised and swollen. Often I felt I couldn't endure to be touched again, but the Lord comforted and strengthened me. I remembered Dr. Jaffray's injunction: "lassie, whatever you do, be a good soldier for Jesus Christ." I prayed that God would help me."
exp. She was a bold soldier for Jesus. She reached the Camp Commander, Mr. Umagi with the Gospel. A man whom she had watched kick a prisoner to death.
 app. Speak out boldly in persecution. Jesus and the apostles have exhorted us to boldly face perseuction.
Acts 14:22  Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.
transition: Speak out boldly in persecution.
 
II. Speak out boldly in preaching.
8  Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel,
exp. Far from being silenced by their persecution, the Spirit filled preacher will take opportunity to preach a short sermon to the 70 religious and political leaders.
 ill. How different this is from the last time Peter and John were near the Sanhedrin. Jesus was on trial. Peter then denied the Lord three times. But now, he's been restored by Jesus. He's been filled with the Spirit of God. 
A. He boldly declares the good work of God.
9  If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole;
exp. Peter takes their accusation and shows them what foolishness it is. They are upset because God in His goodness has restored a cripple.
 exp. The world hates the GOOD WORK that God does.
 ill. Witnessing to Peter - He despised the Gospel because it wrecked a friend of his. She used to drink with him and tell wicked stories. He's upset because she got saved.
quote: Editor of Edinburgh Citizen wrote about the revival at Charlotte Street Chapel - "The body of the chapel was well filled, many drunks having been induced to attend, the service was somewhat lively. The Redeemed Drunkards' Band gave short, pointed testimonies. The life-story of some of these men is simply marvellous, and is proof positive that the day of miracles is not yet past. A religion that can change such men and maek them loving husbands and respectable citizens is a religion worth having."
 app. Praise God, there is hope for mankind. It is a life changing Gospel from a good and loving God. Don't be ashamed to preach the GOOD WORK of God. Bodly declare it!
B. He boldly declares the Good Son of God.
exp. Peter boldly declares JESUS to these religious leaders.
1.) Jesus is the Christ (Messiah)!
10  Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,
question: Do you know the phrase, "Skirt the issue" to go around something controversial....
exp. Peter doesn't "skirt the issue." THEY REJECTED THAT JESUS WAS THE MESSIAH. HE DECLARES IT!
note If we aren't bold preachers we'll skirt the issue. We'll try to go around something controversial.
 ill. Paul didn't avoid controversy after his conversion. He went straight to the point. 
 Acts 9: 20  And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God.
21  But all that heard him were amazed, and said; Is not this he that destroyed them which called on this name in Jerusalem, and came hither for that intent, that he might bring them bound unto the chief priests?
22  But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, proving that this is very Christ.
23  And after that many days were fulfilled, the Jews took counsel to kill him:
24  But their laying await was known of Saul. And they watched the gates day and night to kill him.
25  Then the disciples took him by night, and let him down by the wall in a basket.
26  And when Saul was come to Jerusalem, he assayed to join himself to the disciples: but they were all afraid of him, and believed not that he was a disciple.
27  But Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles, and declared unto them how he had seen the Lord in the way, and that he had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus.
ill. In our day we have a lot of controversial truths and God would have us be bold.
1.) This book is God's Word beginning to end.
2Ti 3:16  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
2.) God didn't create evolution - the devil did. God created EVERYTHING in 6 days.
Gen 1:1  In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
3.) Life begins at conception. 
Jer 1:5  Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.
question: WHO was in his mother's belly - Jeremiah!
4.) Marriage is a covenant relationship between one man and one woman for life.
Gen 2:24  Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
5.) Only God's Way of salvation is the way AND all other religion is false.
Joh 14:6  Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Act 4:12  Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
6.) Men who reject God's way will be cast into hell for all eternity.
Rev 20:15  And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
  7.) Women are forbidden by GOD to pastor and preach.
Tit 1:6  If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.
1Ti 2:12  But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.
app. Do you make excuse and avoid controversy. Satan is sly - he knows that ALL OF GOD'S WORD IS CONTROVERSIAL AND HE'LL TAKE THEM AWAY ONE BY ONE. 
note: Jesus is THE TRUTH which Satan hates. 
transition - Speak out boldly in preaching and declare the Christ.
2.) The Blood of the Messiah is on your hands!
10  Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, 
exp. Worse for them.... Jesus is the Messiah and His blood in on their WICKED HANDS.
ill. This is the second time Peter has boldy accused the Jewish murderers of Jesus.
Act 2:23  Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:
exp. Praise God, a man who denied Jesus has opportunity now to declare Jesus to the very men whom he feared!
note: Part of preaching is facing those who still have the blood of Jesus on their hands and letting them know THAT THEIR WICKEDNESS CRUCIFIED THE LORD JESUS. Is that you today?
Isa 53:5  But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
app. Our world, if they only knew "for the know not what they do" has rejected the most loving sacrifice ever given. In rejecting it THEY PARTICIPATE IN THE CRIME OF IT! Is that you today? If you have refused Jesus - by your very refusal you continue to participat in crucifying him!
3.) God brought Jesus back to life!
whom God raised from the dead,
exp. The Sanhedrin was in denial of the resurrection. 
ill. The soldiers had given them first hand accounts of the angel coming and the open tomb. 
They responded with HUSH MONEY.
Matthew 28:11  Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done.
12  And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers,
13  Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept.
14  And if this come to the governor's ears, we will persuade him, and secure you.
15  So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.
 exp. Would you want to know that someone you had killed was alive? You might think they would seek retribution for their murder. Jesus was not only their victim but their judge.
 ill. Enjoyed our door to door last week. Good visit with a man whom I know. How do you know Jesus is God? I said, let me give you a secular proof. "When men curse, who's name do they use?" The first name he said without thinking, "Jesus Christ" I said, "Exactly!"
app. Our world should tremble today at the man who's name they curse. They are living in denial. Jesus is alive and Jesus will stand in judgment upon them.
4.) Jesus is the POWER AND NAME which made this man whole.
10 that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth...even by him (Jesus) doth this man stand here before you whole.
 exp. At a trial you may have different evidence to be presented to the judge and jury - Exhibit A.
ill. Peter is a good attorney - He turns and points at the evidence of the power of Jesus and presents to this ungodly jury. Exhibit A. a man who's life has been made immensely better by the power of Jesus Christ.
 ill. Do you know that God can forgive all sexual sin?
exp. 1 Corinthians 6:9  Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
10  Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
11  And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
ill. I know a man in Scotland who was a homosexual but He was saved by the grace of God. HE AS EVERY BELIEVER IS - IS A TROPHY OF THE GRACE OF GOD.
 exp. Our world despises the idea that THERE IS SUCH A THING AS SEXUAL SIN THAT NEEDS GOD'S GRACE AND FORGIVENESS TO MAKE A PERSON WHOLE.
note: The following is from The TREVOR project - secular help for people who have sexual sin in their life and are contemplating suicide.
- Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among young people ages 10 to 24.
- LGB youth seriously contemplate suicide at almost three times the rate of heterosexual youth.
- LGB youth are almost five times as likely to have attempted suicide compared to heterosexual youth.
- Of all the suicide attempts made by youth, LGB youth suicide attempts were almost five times as likely to require medical treatment than those of heterosexual youth.2
- Suicide attempts by LGB youth and questioning youth are 4 to 6 times more likely to result in injury, poisoning, or overdose that requires treatment from a doctor or nurse, compared to their straight peers.2
- In a national study, 40% of transgender adults reported having made a suicide attempt. 92% of these individuals reported having attempted suicide before the age of 25.3
- LGB youth who come from highly rejecting families are 8.4 times as likely to have attempted suicide as LGB peers who reported no or low levels of family rejection.4
- 1 out of 6 students nationwide (grades 9–12) seriously considered suicide in the past year.
app. Our world refuses to think that the problem in the despair of these young people is their sin and to even suggest THAT GOD CAN MAKE THEM WHOLE WOULD ENRAGE our world. 
But, is it not a glorious truth that God has the help which these young people need? Forgiving them and giving them victory and bringing truth into their life IS A GREAT THING!
C. He boldly declares the good work of God.
11  This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.
exp. "The head of the corner" is the corner stone.
 def. Got Questions.org - "Since ancient times, builders have used cornerstones in their construction projects. A cornerstone was the principal stone, usually placed at the corner of an edifice, to guide the workers in their course. The cornerstone was usually one of the largest, the most solid, and the most carefully constructed of any in the edifice."
ill. God allowed us to build onto the first home we bought. We had a 70 square meter attached garage. We took 45 square meters and added it to the house. I didn't know anything about building. The first thing I was taught was look down the plank of wood and make sure it is straight. If not, put it in the discard pile.
 exp. The Sanhedrin put Jesus in the discard pile. God didn't allow it. JESUS is the perfect corner stone.
app. What our world has rejected is the very thing that makes our life what it ought to be. The stright truth has been rejected for the crooked wicked lies of the devil. What has happened - families are broken, lives are shattered, politics is corrupt.... Why? BECAUSE THEY HAVE REJECTED GOD'S CORNERSTONE.
D. He boldly declares the good plan of God.
exp. The bold preachers message is coming to a close. He won't let them go without applying what He has told them. 
JESUS IS THE MESSIAH. 
YOU KILLED HIM. 
YOU HAVE rejected God's good work. 
YOU NEED TO REPENT AND COME TO JESUS or there is NO HOPE!
12  Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
exp. Our world has a controversy with God's Word - they think they can stand in judgment upon it.
BUT IT WILL STAND IN JUDGMENT UPON THEM.
Joh 12:48  He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.
 note: I don't believe these preachers were unloving in their boldness in declaring these truths to the Sanhedrin. I believe they deeply desired these religious leaders to KNOW THE TRUTH AND FOLLOW GOD'S PLAN OF SALVATION. 
exp. In declaring truth boldy which is CONTROVERSIAL we aren't seeking to offen the world. We're seeking to win the world. Why? Because no matter how much they hate it. The truth is the only thing that can save them from hell.
Joh 8:31  Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
32  And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
 
conclusion: 
People are going to think things about us - I may occassionally see a "dumb tourist" look. :)
 
But, I wonder how many times a person will be struck by our boldness. 
(The next verse in our text is.)
13  Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.
 
How did they see their boldness?
1.) They were bold in the face of persecution.
a. When opposed.
b. When losing liberty.
c. When questioned.
2.) They were bold in their preaching.
a. Controversial truth - Jesus is the Christ.
b. You killed Jesus.
c. Jesus does good works!
d. Jesus is the only way of salvation.
 
Salt and Light are bold - that's what our world needs. God helps us to be outspoken (bold) for Him!

III. Speak out boldly in position.
13  Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.
14  And beholding the man which was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.
15  But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves,
16  Saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable miracle hath been done by them is manifest to all them that dwell in Jerusalem; and we cannot deny it.
17  But that it spread no further among the people, let us straitly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name.
18  And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.
A. Boldly take your stand on God's Word.
19  But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye.
B. Boldly refuse to stand down from God's Word.
20  For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.
21  So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding nothing how they might punish them, because of the people: for all men glorified God for that which was done.
22  For the man was above forty years old, on whom this miracle of healing was shewed.
 
IV. Speak out boldly in prayer.
23  And being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them.
A. Boldly bring others with you.
24  And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is:
B. Boldly bring God's Word with you.
25  Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things?
26  The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ.
27  For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together,
C. Boldly bring praise with you.
28  For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done.
D. Boldly bring petitions with you.
29  And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word,
30  By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus.
31  And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.
 
V. Speak out boldly in provision.
 saying: "Actions speak louder than words."
 exp. The actions of the early church go beyond anything God has commanded in God's Word with the exception of what our Lord said to the rich young ruler,  Mat 19:21  Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.
A. Boldly give without grudging.
32  And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.
B. Boldly give by God's grace.
33  And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all. 34  Neither was there any among them that lacked:
C. Boldly give to meet the need.
...for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold,
35  And laid them down at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.
D. Boldly give beyond your means. (exp. Barnabus gave himself.)
36  And Joses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas, (which is, being interpreted, The son of consolation,) a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus,

Title: Outspoken for God

 

 

Introduction:

It can be interesting at times having an American accent in Scotland. 

Some people assume that just because you sound like you aren't from here that you aren't from here. 

(We've been here a decade and have citizenship. Two of our kids don't remember the US.) 

- We're very much used to the climate.

- We're way used to the driving - I have a hard time going back to right side driving.

- We're can well understand and be better understood than when we first arrived.

- But if we ask a question, we sometimes get answered as if we're from another country.

 

ill. I visited Alan in Hospital a few times lately and twice I've had to ask at the nurse's station for, "Alan McGraith." They get a confused look on their faces look at one another and say, "You mean McGrath." I can almost see them thinking (.... dumb American... doesn't know how to say a Scottish surname correctly.) McGraith is correct! 

 

exp. I'm thankful that we don't always know what people are thinking when they meet us or we'd probably hear things we don't want to hear.

note: The word of God speaks OUT LOUD to let us know what the false religious leaders thought of the early church Gospel preachers.

 

exp. It was something like, "Dumb fishermen...But, man are those guys bold! I wonder if it's because they spent time with Jesus?"

13  Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.

def. boldness: outspokeness, assurance, confidence

 

 chapter 4 of Acts has a theme of boldness running right through it. The early church was a bold OUTSPOKEN church. 

v.31  And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.

 

We need to be outspoken for God. How bold are you?

 exp. We're going to consider (from Acts 4) the areas in which we could follow the model of the early church and be bold for God.

 

I. Speak out boldly in persecution.

def. persecution - Persuing someone to cause them to suffer.

note: Our sense of rightness and fairness doesn't like persecution.

ill.  If we heard a story about bullying we would get upset. It's wrong for that bully to persue someone to cause them to suffer.

      If we hear about someone "trolling" someone online (putting inflamatory information online to purposely in digress from a topic.) We get upset because that isnt' fair.

 note: Because we think it is unfair, it seems we are suprised when it happens to a believer. But, we shouldn't be.

2 Timothy 3:12  Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.

ill. Jesus is the Captain of our salvation and he was persecuted unto death.

Heb 2:10  For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

Heb 2:9  But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

ill. God's preachers have historically faced persecution.

Jas 5:10  Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience.

 ill. In my evangelism, I've had people tell me - Christianity is a crutch. You need it - I don't. I tell people like that, "Christianity isn't a crutch - it's a cross." JESUS WAS CRUCIFIED. 

App. How are you going to respond when you are persued by those who want you to suffer as a Christian? We need to speak out boldly in days of persecution.

A. Be bold when opposed.

exp. Peter and John, God's preachers, faced great opposition. The lame man was healed and a great crowd has assembled who have heard these bold preachers declare Jesus!

1  And as they spake unto the people, the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees, came upon them,

2  Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead.

exp. When the enemies of Jesus are upset, you are doing something right.

1Co 16:9  For a great door and effectual is opened unto me, and there are many adversaries.

 ill. We've put out hundeds of thousands of flyers with very little feedback even from believers. I've often lamented this - But, Pastor Dillman last month got a letter back from a Christian couple in Livingston - VERY ENCOURAGING. The next week he got a flyer back that was written all over and it was not favourable. (persecution)

exp. We've received a few of those over the year. I've had angry people yell at me and received a few phone calls. 

 ill. My last phone call was for close to an hour and I've told you, "Pray for the farmer of Skirling." He didn't hinder me from using that flyer. His phone call and the other negative feedback caused me to reprint 10,000 more flyers. (Why? Because if Satan doesn't like it, it must be hitting a target.)

 note: We don't need a persecution complex - we've not yet begun to suffer as some believers have suffered in their day. BUT SATAN WILL ACTIVELY OPPOSE US.

app. When Satan opposes you (people are grieved by what you are saying as you stand for God) don't stop speaking! Ask God for boldness and continue to be outspoken for Jesus.

B. Be bold when losing liberty.

3  And they laid hands on them, and put them in hold unto the next day: for it was now eventide.

4  Howbeit many of them which heard the word believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand.

exp. Peter and John lost their liberty that night. But, as they were losing their liberty (5,000 men plus women and children) were set free from their bondage.

 ill. Jesus, Sermon on the Mount, Preached on persecution.

Matthew 5:11  Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

12  Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

13  Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

14  Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

15  Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

16  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

 note: Immediately after preaching on persecution Jesus reminded them that THEY were salt and that THEY were light. AND THAT THEIR LIGHT SHINING AND GOOD WORKS - would bring men to glorifying the Father in Heaven.

exp. Peter and John could have could have said, "Well I guess we can't preach Jesus. If we do, we'll lose our liberty."

  note: Satan doesn't want you to be outspoken SALT AND LIGHT. He'll try to stop your saltiness and put out your light.

 ill. Hate crime legislation in Scotland has UNASHAMEDLY targeted believers. Police Scotland bus stop sign, "Dear Bigots, division seems to be what you believe in. We don't want your religious hate on our buses, on our streets and in our communities. We don't want you spreading your intolerance. Or making people's lives a misery because of their religious dress.  You may not have faith in repsect and love, but we do. That why if we see or hear your ate, we're reporting you. End of sermon. Yours, Scotland. (Hate crime. Report it to STOP IT.)

exp. Our liberty is beginning to be threatened - future persecution may relize that reality. 

app. Be bold - people need to be saved! Speak out, even if losing liberty.

C. Be bold when questioned.

exp. Peter and John had spent the night knowing that in the morning they would be on trial before the Sanhedrin. 

def. Sanhedrin: Seventy Rabbis who were the ruling body of the Jews. These earthly judges had recently given Jesus a mock trial before turning him over to Pilate.

note: The Holy Spirit would have been emboldened the resolve of these preachers with the words of the Lord recorded in....

Matthew 10:18  And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles.

19  But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.

20  For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.

 exp. Now -  the cell door opens and they are ordered to their feet to face earthly judges.

5  And it came to pass on the morrow, that their rulers, and elders, and scribes,

6  And Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem.

7  And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what name, have ye done this?

exp. What is your source of miraculous power, in whose name have you done this work?

  note: As with our Lord the Sanhedrin DID NOT BELIEVE THAT THE POWER WAS FROM GOD. (Mat 12:24  But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.) 

exp. There are times where believers will face interrogation from an earthly authority who does not accept the AUTHORITY of God behind what we do.

 ill. Kampili - Japanese Interrogators in WWII - Darlene Diabler Rose - Evidence Not Seen - If an answer didn't please the Brain, he would snap an order to the Interrogator, who struck me a swift karate chop with the cutting edge of his hand. He was skilled in striking with great force and precision that very tender spot close to the shoulder at the base of the neck. A well-placed blow was excruciatingly painful and paralyzing. other times the Interrogator used his middle finger. Flicking it from behind his thumb, he thumped me repeatedly between the eyes until I thought my nerves would explode. My forehead became bruised and swollen. Often I felt I couldn't endure to be touched again, but the Lord comforted and strengthened me. I remembered Dr. Jaffray's injunction: "lassie, whatever you do, be a good soldier for Jesus Christ." I prayed that God would help me."

exp. She was a bold soldier for Jesus. She reached the Camp Commander, Mr. Umagi with the Gospel. A man whom she had watched kick a prisoner to death.

 app. Speak out boldly in persecution. Jesus and the apostles have exhorted us to boldly face perseuction.

Acts 14:22  Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.

transition: Speak out boldly in persecution.

 

II. Speak out boldly in preaching.

8  Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel,

exp. Far from being silenced by their persecution, the Spirit filled preacher will take opportunity to preach a short sermon to the 70 religious and political leaders.

 ill. How different this is from the last time Peter and John were near the Sanhedrin. Jesus was on trial. Peter then denied the Lord three times. But now, he's been restored by Jesus. He's been filled with the Spirit of God. 

A. He boldly declares the good work of God.

9  If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole;

exp. Peter takes their accusation and shows them what foolishness it is. They are upset because God in His goodness has restored a cripple.

 exp. The world hates the GOOD WORK that God does.

 ill. Witnessing to Peter - He despised the Gospel because it wrecked a friend of his. She used to drink with him and tell wicked stories. He's upset because she got saved.

quote: Editor of Edinburgh Citizen wrote about the revival at Charlotte Street Chapel - "The body of the chapel was well filled, many drunks having been induced to attend, the service was somewhat lively. The Redeemed Drunkards' Band gave short, pointed testimonies. The life-story of some of these men is simply marvellous, and is proof positive that the day of miracles is not yet past. A religion that can change such men and maek them loving husbands and respectable citizens is a religion worth having."

 app. Praise God, there is hope for mankind. It is a life changing Gospel from a good and loving God. Don't be ashamed to preach the GOOD WORK of God. Bodly declare it!

B. He boldly declares the Good Son of God.

exp. Peter boldly declares JESUS to these religious leaders.

1.) Jesus is the Christ (Messiah)!

10  Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,

question: Do you know the phrase, "Skirt the issue" to go around something controversial....

exp. Peter doesn't "skirt the issue." THEY REJECTED THAT JESUS WAS THE MESSIAH. HE DECLARES IT!

note If we aren't bold preachers we'll skirt the issue. We'll try to go around something controversial.

 ill. Paul didn't avoid controversy after his conversion. He went straight to the point. 

 Acts 9: 20  And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God.

21  But all that heard him were amazed, and said; Is not this he that destroyed them which called on this name in Jerusalem, and came hither for that intent, that he might bring them bound unto the chief priests?

22  But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, proving that this is very Christ.

23  And after that many days were fulfilled, the Jews took counsel to kill him:

24  But their laying await was known of Saul. And they watched the gates day and night to kill him.

25  Then the disciples took him by night, and let him down by the wall in a basket.

26  And when Saul was come to Jerusalem, he assayed to join himself to the disciples: but they were all afraid of him, and believed not that he was a disciple.

27  But Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles, and declared unto them how he had seen the Lord in the way, and that he had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus.

ill. In our day we have a lot of controversial truths and God would have us be bold.

1.) This book is God's Word beginning to end.

2Ti 3:16  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

2.) God didn't create evolution - the devil did. God created EVERYTHING in 6 days.

Gen 1:1  In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

3.) Life begins at conception. 

Jer 1:5  Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

question: WHO was in his mother's belly - Jeremiah!

4.) Marriage is a covenant relationship between one man and one woman for life.

Gen 2:24  Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

5.) Only God's Way of salvation is the way AND all other religion is false.

Joh 14:6  Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Act 4:12  Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

6.) Men who reject God's way will be cast into hell for all eternity.

Rev 20:15  And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

  7.) Women are forbidden by GOD to pastor and preach.

Tit 1:6  If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.

1Ti 2:12  But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.

app. Do you make excuse and avoid controversy. Satan is sly - he knows that ALL OF GOD'S WORD IS CONTROVERSIAL AND HE'LL TAKE THEM AWAY ONE BY ONE. 

note: Jesus is THE TRUTH which Satan hates. 

transition - Speak out boldly in preaching and declare the Christ.

2.) The Blood of the Messiah is on your hands!

10  Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, 

exp. Worse for them.... Jesus is the Messiah and His blood in on their WICKED HANDS.

ill. This is the second time Peter has boldy accused the Jewish murderers of Jesus.

Act 2:23  Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:

exp. Praise God, a man who denied Jesus has opportunity now to declare Jesus to the very men whom he feared!

note: Part of preaching is facing those who still have the blood of Jesus on their hands and letting them know THAT THEIR WICKEDNESS CRUCIFIED THE LORD JESUS. Is that you today?

Isa 53:5  But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

app. Our world, if they only knew "for the know not what they do" has rejected the most loving sacrifice ever given. In rejecting it THEY PARTICIPATE IN THE CRIME OF IT! Is that you today? If you have refused Jesus - by your very refusal you continue to participat in crucifying him!

3.) God brought Jesus back to life!

whom God raised from the dead,

exp. The Sanhedrin was in denial of the resurrection. 

ill. The soldiers had given them first hand accounts of the angel coming and the open tomb. 

They responded with HUSH MONEY.

Matthew 28:11  Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done.

12  And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers,

13  Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept.

14  And if this come to the governor's ears, we will persuade him, and secure you.

15  So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.

 exp. Would you want to know that someone you had killed was alive? You might think they would seek retribution for their murder. Jesus was not only their victim but their judge.

 ill. Enjoyed our door to door last week. Good visit with a man whom I know. How do you know Jesus is God? I said, let me give you a secular proof. "When men curse, who's name do they use?" The first name he said without thinking, "Jesus Christ" I said, "Exactly!"

app. Our world should tremble today at the man who's name they curse. They are living in denial. Jesus is alive and Jesus will stand in judgment upon them.

4.) Jesus is the POWER AND NAME which made this man whole.

10 that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth...even by him (Jesus) doth this man stand here before you whole.

 exp. At a trial you may have different evidence to be presented to the judge and jury - Exhibit A.

ill. Peter is a good attorney - He turns and points at the evidence of the power of Jesus and presents to this ungodly jury. Exhibit A. a man who's life has been made immensely better by the power of Jesus Christ.

 ill. Do you know that God can forgive all sexual sin?

exp. 1 Corinthians 6:9  Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,

10  Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

11  And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

ill. I know a man in Scotland who was a homosexual but He was saved by the grace of God. HE AS EVERY BELIEVER IS - IS A TROPHY OF THE GRACE OF GOD.

 exp. Our world despises the idea that THERE IS SUCH A THING AS SEXUAL SIN THAT NEEDS GOD'S GRACE AND FORGIVENESS TO MAKE A PERSON WHOLE.

note: The following is from The TREVOR project - secular help for people who have sexual sin in their life and are contemplating suicide.

- Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among young people ages 10 to 24.

- LGB youth seriously contemplate suicide at almost three times the rate of heterosexual youth.

- LGB youth are almost five times as likely to have attempted suicide compared to heterosexual youth.

- Of all the suicide attempts made by youth, LGB youth suicide attempts were almost five times as likely to require medical treatment than those of heterosexual youth.2

- Suicide attempts by LGB youth and questioning youth are 4 to 6 times more likely to result in injury, poisoning, or overdose that requires treatment from a doctor or nurse, compared to their straight peers.2

- In a national study, 40% of transgender adults reported having made a suicide attempt. 92% of these individuals reported having attempted suicide before the age of 25.3

- LGB youth who come from highly rejecting families are 8.4 times as likely to have attempted suicide as LGB peers who reported no or low levels of family rejection.4

- 1 out of 6 students nationwide (grades 9–12) seriously considered suicide in the past year.

app. Our world refuses to think that the problem in the despair of these young people is their sin and to even suggest THAT GOD CAN MAKE THEM WHOLE WOULD ENRAGE our world. 

But, is it not a glorious truth that God has the help which these young people need? Forgiving them and giving them victory and bringing truth into their life IS A GREAT THING!

C. He boldly declares the good work of God.

11  This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.

exp. "The head of the corner" is the corner stone.

 def. Got Questions.org - "Since ancient times, builders have used cornerstones in their construction projects. A cornerstone was the principal stone, usually placed at the corner of an edifice, to guide the workers in their course. The cornerstone was usually one of the largest, the most solid, and the most carefully constructed of any in the edifice."

ill. God allowed us to build onto the first home we bought. We had a 70 square meter attached garage. We took 45 square meters and added it to the house. I didn't know anything about building. The first thing I was taught was look down the plank of wood and make sure it is straight. If not, put it in the discard pile.

 exp. The Sanhedrin put Jesus in the discard pile. God didn't allow it. JESUS is the perfect corner stone.

app. What our world has rejected is the very thing that makes our life what it ought to be. The stright truth has been rejected for the crooked wicked lies of the devil. What has happened - families are broken, lives are shattered, politics is corrupt.... Why? BECAUSE THEY HAVE REJECTED GOD'S CORNERSTONE.

D. He boldly declares the good plan of God.

exp. The bold preachers message is coming to a close. He won't let them go without applying what He has told them. 

JESUS IS THE MESSIAH. 

YOU KILLED HIM. 

YOU HAVE rejected God's good work. 

YOU NEED TO REPENT AND COME TO JESUS or there is NO HOPE!

12  Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

exp. Our world has a controversy with God's Word - they think they can stand in judgment upon it.

BUT IT WILL STAND IN JUDGMENT UPON THEM.

Joh 12:48  He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

 note: I don't believe these preachers were unloving in their boldness in declaring these truths to the Sanhedrin. I believe they deeply desired these religious leaders to KNOW THE TRUTH AND FOLLOW GOD'S PLAN OF SALVATION. 

exp. In declaring truth boldy which is CONTROVERSIAL we aren't seeking to offen the world. We're seeking to win the world. Why? Because no matter how much they hate it. The truth is the only thing that can save them from hell.

Joh 8:31  Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

32  And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

 

conclusion: 

People are going to think things about us - I may occassionally see a "dumb tourist" look. :)

 

But, I wonder how many times a person will be struck by our boldness. 

(The next verse in our text is.)

13  Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.

 

How did they see their boldness?

1.) They were bold in the face of persecution.

a. When opposed.

b. When losing liberty.

c. When questioned.

2.) They were bold in their preaching.

a. Controversial truth - Jesus is the Christ.

b. You killed Jesus.

c. Jesus does good works!

d. Jesus is the only way of salvation.

 

Salt and Light are bold - that's what our world needs. God helps us to be outspoken (bold) for Him!

III. Speak out boldly in position.

13  Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.

14  And beholding the man which was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.

15  But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves,

16  Saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable miracle hath been done by them is manifest to all them that dwell in Jerusalem; and we cannot deny it.

17  But that it spread no further among the people, let us straitly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name.

18  And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.

A. Boldly take your stand on God's Word.

19  But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye.

B. Boldly refuse to stand down from God's Word.

20  For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.

21  So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding nothing how they might punish them, because of the people: for all men glorified God for that which was done.

22  For the man was above forty years old, on whom this miracle of healing was shewed.

 

IV. Speak out boldly in prayer.

23  And being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them.

A. Boldly bring others with you.

24  And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is:

B. Boldly bring God's Word with you.

25  Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things?

26  The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ.

27  For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together,

C. Boldly bring praise with you.

28  For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done.

D. Boldly bring petitions with you.

29  And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word,

30  By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus.

31  And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.

 

V. Speak out boldly in provision.

 saying: "Actions speak louder than words."

 exp. The actions of the early church go beyond anything God has commanded in God's Word with the exception of what our Lord said to the rich young ruler,  Mat 19:21  Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

A. Boldly give without grudging.

32  And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.

B. Boldly give by God's grace.

33  And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all. 34  Neither was there any among them that lacked:

C. Boldly give to meet the need.

...for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold,

35  And laid them down at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.

D. Boldly give beyond your means. (exp. Barnabus gave himself.)

36  And Joses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas, (which is, being interpreted, The son of consolation,) a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus,
