Hymn: By E. E. Hewitt, Stars in My Crown
1 I am thinking today of that beautiful land
I shall reach when the sun goeth down;
When thro' wonderful grace by my Savior I stand,
Will there be any stars in my crown?
Chorus:
Will there be any stars, any stars in my crown
When at evening the sun goeth down?
When I wake with the blest in the mansions of rest,
Will there be any stars in my crown?
2 In the strength of the Lord let me labor and pray,
Let me watch as a winner of souls;
That bright stars may be mine in the glorious day,
When His praise like the sea-billow rolls. (Chorus)
3 Oh, what joy it will be when His face I behold,
Living gems at His feet to lay down;
It would sweeten my bliss in the city of gold,
Should there be any stars in my crown.
exp. E. E. Hewitt - used stars to speak of gems in his crown which he desired to lay at the feet of the Saviour.

ill. The idea of laying crowns at the Saviours feet is Biblical
Revelation 4:10  The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying,
11  Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

It is wonderful to have things of eternal value to offer to God.

Today is mothering Sunday. It is the day where we celebrate our mother. It is a much more joyous day for those who have a mother that is what God intended her to be. She is called A VIRTUOUS WOMAN in the Bible.

ill. Naomi spoke highly of her daughter in law by using that term - Ruth 3:11  And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou requirest: for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous woman.

This morning I want us to consider the jewels of womanhood. (Of the viruous woman.)
Pro 12:4  A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.
Pro 31:10  Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

note: Our society does not have proper values with regard to womanhood.
1.) They love nakedness and mock modesty.
2.) They want women to work and many would mock the idea of stay at home mums.
3.) They look at marriage as bondage and rebel against commitment.
4.) They often view pregnancy and children as shackles.
5.) They certainly would not look into the Bible to see what God expects of womanhood.

The world won't like this message from God's Word. But, the wise will LAY UP TREASURE IN HEAVEN BY LETTING GOD HAVE HIS WAY THROUGH HIS WORD.
 text: I Peter 3:1-7

I. The jewel of submission.
1  Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;
exp. This command in marriage is from God. God says obedience to it is the most effective way to reach an unsaved husbands heart with the Gospel.
def. Subjection - submit self unto.
Eph 5:22  Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
Col 3:18  Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.
exp. God does not just command woman to submit to their husbands. They and their husbands are to submit to many other authorities.
1.) God
Jas 4:7  Submit yourselves therefore to God.
question: What is the world like when men don't obey God? (wicked)
2.) Government.
Heb 13:17  Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves:
question: What is the world like when men don't obey government? (Riotous, divided,...)
3.) Law
1Pe 2:13  Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake:
question: What is the world like when men don't obey law? (Lawless, hurtful and hurting....)
4.) Spiritual authority
1Pe 5:5  Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder.
question: What is the church like when men don't submit to church leadership? (Prideful, schismatic....)
app. What is the home like when a woman does not submit to her husband's leadership? (Divided, two headed, rebelious,....)
ill. Speaking with a woman who is a believer but is an elder in a church with a woman pastor. She was so very kind and receptive as I spoke to her about what God's Word says about a minister being a man. I asked her, "Wouldn't it be odd if at home I was the head of my family but at church my wife was head over me?"
ill. I feel bad for prince Philip with regard to being the head of his house. He is married to the queen who did not take his name when he married her. Is that what God intended? It will surely sound cross cultural to say so but I would hope that Queen Elizabeth is subject to her husband privately within their marriage - because that is Biblical.
note: This command of God to submit is one of the earliest commands recorded in God's Word and it is part of the curse against Eve's transgression
Genesis 3:16  Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
app. Jewels aren't formed easily. Diamonds are formed under 725,000 pounds per square inch. You won't be a virtuous woman easily. It takes the grace of God to accept the curse which God authoritatively put upon your sex in the Garden of Eden - BUT WITH GOD'S GRACE SUBMITTING TO HIS CURSE IS WHERE THE BLESSING IS TO BE FOUND. Adorn your crown with the jewel of submission.

II. The jewel of purity.
2  While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear.
exp. Chastity is purity. Conversation is lifestyle. (The manner in which you live.) It has to do with holy living.
ill. Mother's ought to be different. My family - if there was ever any humor which was slightly rude  (bathroom) humor - my mother wasn't a party to it. She would rebuke it if needed.
note: Even the world used to adhere to this virtue of purity and chastity in womanhood.
1.) Women didn't go where men would go.
2.) Women didn't drink what men would drink or smoke what men would smoke.
3.) Women didn't say what men would say.
4.) In general Women had higher morals etc.
ill. WW1 changed much of this - article by Jasper Copping, Telegraph "The study shows how their drinking habits were transformed during the conflict. With more of them working and with so many men away at the front, women found themselves with more disposable income and freed from many domestic restraints. In increasing numbers, they flocked to pubs, traditionally the preserve of men, and drank alcohol in greater quantities than before.
The trend prompted moral outrage among many observers, with calls for the Government to take action to keep women out of bars, for publicans to stop serving them, and even for changes to the design of pubs, to discourage female drinkers."
exp. EVEN THE WORLD USED TO KNOW THAT WOMEN SHOULD BE KEPT CLEAN FROM THE FILTH OF THE WORLD.
app. Everyone is to be pure. But, what a beautiful jewel for womanhood is found in purity! Unsaved husbands God says will take note of a Godly wife who is chaste in her lifestyle.

III. The jewel of humility.
3  Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;
ill. Have you ever noticed when shopping that the men's department is one size (if they have one) and the woman's department is most of the shop.
ill. Incredibly expensive wallets don't really exist. The most expensive one I could find is the Biometric wallet from Dunhill - which links to your bluetooth phone and sounds an alarm if it gets 5 meters away from you.
ill. Woman's purse - Birkin - sold for 208,175 pounds.
Exp. Is this purse more functional than a normal purse. Do the 245 diamonds and white gold detailing make it better quality and a better handbag. Are thieves more likely to leave it alone or take it (possibly taking your life at the same time?) WHY WOULD YOU BUY IT - because of what people think about you for having it.
exp. God's Word has a term for this - it is called the PRIDE OF LIFE. And it is from the pit of Hell not the gates of Heaven. 1Jn 2:16  For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
app. Men don't normally live for fashion - but women do. God says - IT'S NOT TO BE THE FOCUS OF A VIRTUOUS WOMAN'S LIFE. Do you have the jewel of humility?

IV. The jewel of meekness.
4  But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
ill. Have you ever noticed that you enjoy things that others may or may not enjoy? I enjoy agate hunting - other people just see them as rocks - BUT IN MY EYES THEY ARE OF GREAT PRICE. I'm not an authority on what is truly valuable - BUT GOD IS! "In the sight of God"
exp. GOD says meek and quiet spirited women are priceless!
ill. The adulterous woman is characterized in Proverbs 7 in which you will see a contrast.
10  And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart.
11  (She is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house:
12  Now is she without, now in the streets, and lieth in wait at every corner.)
13  So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him,
14  I have peace offerings with me; this day have I payed my vows.
15  Therefore came I forth to meet thee, diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee.
16  I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt.
17  I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.
18  Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning: let us solace ourselves with loves.
19  For the goodman is not at home, he is gone a long journey:
exp. Men beware of loud stubborn women. They may use their tongue for seduction.
app. Is your spirit priceless to God? Don't cheapen your womanhood with a loud and unruly spirit. Put on the jewel of a meek and quiet spirit.

V. The jewel of faithfulness.
5  For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:
6  Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.
exp. Wow! This passage is definitely outside the comfort zone of the world. She called her husband master (She was respectful of his leadership in her life) and God's Word lifts her up as an example of virtue in womanhood. What was Sarah? She was a faithful wife. Faithful to God and faithful to her husband.
note: God's Word challenges women to be "daughters to Sarah" by following her example of faithfulness.
1.) Should I honour my husband if his attitude is wrong?
ill. Seperate illustration of submission from previous chapter - I Peter 2:18  Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.
19  For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.
20  For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.
21  For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
22  Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:
23  Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:
2.) Should I honour my husband if he asks me to violate God's Word?
Act 5:29  Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.
app. Other generations have had many more examples of Godly women than we have in our day. How we ought to look up to their faithfulness to God and their husbands and lift up their example. Do you have the jewel of faithfulness.

IV. The jewel of honour.
7  Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.
ill. Our world often perverts truth to it's own end.
Homophobic - meaning that someone hates homosexuals - to anyone who believes that homosexuality is wrong.
Misogyny - dislike of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against women.
exp. They would accuse God's Word of misogyny for saying that women are weaker than men.
question: Are women weaker than men? Why are their separate events in the Olympics for men and women? Do the men go higher, faster, are they stronger? Why? Because God made them that way.
ill. Watching a woman pc get the worst of it in our street as she tried to arrest a drunk and I thought if my life was on the line I'd rather have a big man than a little woman trying to help me.
question: Does weaker mean inferior?
ill. I mentioned before that we collect W. German pottery. If I had a ming vase and a W. German Vase - which ones is stronger? Which one is inferior?
app. There is a wonderful treasure in the incredible value of woman WHICH IS INCREASED BY THE FACT THAT SHE DOESN'T HAVE BISEPS BIGGER THAN HER HUSBAND. She is guarded and protected by her husband and WONDERFULLY DEPENDENT UPON HIM. Do you value the JEWEL OF HONOR GOD GAVE YOU IN YOUR BY ALLOWING YOU TO BE THE WEAKER VESSEL.

conclusion:
I like what E. E. Jewett asked himself in the hymn he wrote.
Will there be any stars, any stars in my crown
When at evening the sun goeth down?
When I wake with the blest in the mansions of rest,
Will there be any stars in my crown?

Pro 31:10  Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

Do you have the Jewel of
1.) Submission?
2.) Purity?
3.) Humility?
4.) Meekness?
5.) Faithfulness?
